Back Stage - L.A. Reviews
Review: The Life
In its L.A. premiere, there's indeed plenty of life in this 1997 gem, the last Broadway musical by composer Cy Coleman. Jaxx Theatricals' auspicious maiden offering bursts with energy and pizzazz, thanks to Joe Greene's vibrant direction and music direction and Paul Romero Jr.'s galvanic choreography.
Review: Ken Roht's 99 Cent Only Calendar Girl Competition
If now is not the time to redefine beauty and put it onstage in a budget extravaganza, when is? With his finger on the pulse of all things American, Ken Roht and his creative collaborators are back and giving us just what we need.
Review: Aah! Scrooge Must Die
Now, I'm not someone who believes a Christmas classic should necessarily stay up on a pedestal. I like a generous helping of irreverence in my eggnog, and I'm all for adding a little dick to Charles Dickens.
Review: Kidnapped by Craigslist
This zany, rollicking show by Katie Goan and Nitra Gutierrez is essentially an evening of sketch comedy derived from actual postings on Craigslist, making it a catalog of human oddities.
Review: Fiddler on the Roof
Everything feels in its place in this revisit to the perennially popular 1964 Broadway musical. There aren't unexpected staging concepts, and lead player Thomas Fiscella, as the patriarch Tevye, looks and sounds amazingly like Topol, who starred in the 1971 film version.
Review: A Grand Guignol Children's Show
Here's the raffishly stylish piece of holiday counter-programming you're seeking. Well, it's not really a holiday show, per se, and despite the title it's most definitely not a children's show
