Bitter Lemons
“It is clear, therefore, that the choice of object must emanate from a corresponding vibration in the human soul.” - Wassily Kandinsky
Ever since I heard those words uttered in John Guare’s masterpiece “Six Degrees of Separation” they have haunted my every attempt at writing something new. I was in the original Broadway production of the play at the Lincoln Center many moons ago and that production was my Theatre University. The Best Writing, Best [...]

Making Art - Making Community - Making Cents
Three experiences converged into one idea for me this week: if the arts can be viewed as a part of the solution to social problems they will increase their standing in the hierarchy of public causes.

Fern Siegel: Stage Door: Blithe Spirit, Cirque's Kooza, Mary Stuart
British comedies have usually played well on American shores. The tart Blithe Spirit, now at the Schubert Theater, is no exception. The revival is a light-hearted trifle, but still manages to send up marriage, fidelity and the spirit world. And it doesn't hurt that it stars Angela Lansbury, Christine Ebersole and Rupert Everett, who give this Noel Coward classic its bite.

"Shorts" programs get restyled
City Theatre's ever-popular Summer Shortsfestival is on the horizon, with rehearsals about to start, the acting company chosen, plays picked, directors at the ready. The headlines this year go this way: no more "A" and "B" programs; instead, one program of eight "Signature Shorts," and another eight pushing-the-envelope plays in the late-night "Undershorts" bill. The "Shorts 4 Kids!" program also has eight elements, including a pair of mini-musicals (aka songs) by Lisa Loeb and Cyndi Lauper.
